Overview

Math is a subject of knowledge focused on quantities of values, items, things, etc. It is also focused on the operations that can be done on or to these quantities.

Math, therefore, is fundamentally based upon numbers, which, simply speaking, is a way of representing a quantity.

Branches of Math

The following is a table of different mathematical subjects, areas, etc. that encompass different aspects of mathematics. More detail will be provided when these subjects are actually introduced in their respective unit, but this table is meant to provide an overview on the different fields of math.

FieldDescription
ArithmeticSimply performinig arithmetic on numbers and variables.
AlgebraModelling relationships between variables using arithmetic and/or graphing.
GeometryStudying physical (or physical models) of shapes, solids, surfaces, curves, etc.
TrigonometrySubset of Geometry focusing on angles and distances.
TopologySubset of Geometry focused on the characteristics of surfaces and space.
StatisticsSubject focused on understanding the characteristics of data.
CalculusMathematics focused on rates of changes, continuous changes, area under the curve, etc.
Theoretical MathA blanket branch I am using to encompass Set Theory, Number Theory, Logic, etc.

There are of course, many, MANY more fields than this, but I’m using these branches to encompass a large portion of math. There are other fields, such as Combinatorics, Discrete Math, Linear Algebra, Cryptography, Optimization, and Differential Equations which, while their prescence in this book isn’t guaranteed, are all important aspects of math and account for important parts of maths.

Brief History of Math

This section summarizes the history of math as a timeline of different crucial events.

Math itself is a long-standing historically-rich subject that has spanned across millennia of human existence. It’s basically been around for as long as society has.
